Following extension of Civitavecchia Port Authority's territory to include Fiumicino and Gaeta, the Latium ports network was formed with of redistributing resources among the individual ports to aid the rationalisation of maritime transport and increase traffic by offering a broad range of services and specialisation by each port. The logic behind this system is to offer domestic and intenational clients  a variety of choices for different types of freight.

The ports of Rome and Latium, Civitavecchia, Fiumicino and Gaeta, are situated at the centre of Italy's modern, efficient logistic system which connects Rome and central Italy  with the rest of the world.  At the centre of the Mediterrenean and served by a fast, efficient road, motorway and railway network linking the capital with Fiumicino and Ciampino international airports and the nearby regions, the Latium ports system is strategically placed for access to Italy's most popular tourist areas and the Mediterrean cruise routes.
