A truly original excursion from Fiumicino is to the Porto Nature Oasis, where in romantic horse-drawn carriages, tourists can admire the park's beauty and visit the shores of Lake Trajan. The trees in this Oasis are strictly protected, and there are excellent observation points for bird watching.
Along this strech of coast, green is definitely the predominant colour, along with the colours of the sea. The whole area is a garden by the sea. South of Fiumicino, the Roman Coast State Nature Reserve includes the Castelfusano Pinewood Urban Park, set within the city and accessible both from the Lungomare di Levante (Eastern Esplanade) and from the inland side of Ostia Antica. This protected area is characterised by pine trees and species typical to the Mediterranean scrub such as strawberry trees and juniper.

On the western side of the Lipu Nature Oasis, the San Michele Tower can bee seen - a fortification designed by Michelangelo and built as a defence against Saracen incursions. Inside the park are cycle trails, and more strenuous itineraries for mountain-bike enthusiasts follow the tracks of the Via Severiana, the ancient coastal road which lead from Ostia to Lake Averno.
Excursions on horseback among the dunes and in the pinewood can be organised in every season.
